My contribution will be the implementation of food insecurity screening in cancer management, followed by an intervention. Research has shown that there is a high prevalence of food insecurity among patients with cancer, especially low-income minorities. Nutrition plays an important role in cancer survivorship via symptom control and impact on the bioavailability of therapies. Identifying food insecure patients is the first stage of my project. The next stage is to intervene by connecting patients with community nutrition programs as well as providing them with financial assistance, via “Health Bucks,” so that barriers to a nutritious and healthy recovery can be removed.
