My project was inspired by my own experiences in the hospital as a child as well as my volunteering experiences through the years. I remember being rushed into the emergency room terrified and surrounded by unfamiliar faces and scary machines. Too quickly, I decided that I hated the hospital. Later, a nurse handed me a stuffed panda bear and suddenly I realized the hospital wasn’t so scary after all. It may seem like such an insignificant thing, but any sort of thing to make children in these situations feel more comfortable and at ease makes a big difference for everyone involved: the child, the parents, the doctors, nurses, first responders, etc. I want to provide children’s backpacks filled with toys, books, dolls, crayons, etc. to both the Pediatric floor at my local hospital as well as my local EMT squad. My hope is to give children a positive health care experience. Perhaps, maybe even one that they will look back on and remember for as long as I did.
